Understanding Trip Insurance for Your Upcoming SwimVacation

HIGHLIGHT: Please purchase trip insurance as soon as you make a deposit on your SwimVacation. You do not need to wait until you purchase your air travel! You can estimate travel costs and insure for that amount.

We are so excited you’ve decided to register for a SwimVacation trip! These are weird times for travel, and although we have always required it, we feel strongly that travel insurance has never been more important. Some forms of travel insurance are time-sensitive, so have a look at our general wrap up on the different types of insurance products out there, then purchase the plan that works for you as soon as possible.

SwimVacation requires all of our guests to carry travel insurance for medical costs and evacuation, and now many of our destinations do as well. This is a very basic level of insurance, usually referred to as a Medical and Evacuation Plan and costing between $40 and $80 for a typical week abroad. These plans offer emergency medical and evacuation benefits to travelers who will be traveling outside of their home country and need coverage while abroad. Travel Medical plans do not offer trip cost protection benefits.

The next level of insurance to consider are Comprehensive Plans. These plans offer additional benefits including trip cancellation, trip interruption, travel delay, baggage loss or damage as well as emergency medical and evacuation benefits. They are ideal for nearly every traveler, and range in cost from $50 to $150 dollars for a typical week abroad.

Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) is an optional benefit of travel insurance coverage which offers the opportunity to cancel travel plans for reasons other than those listed as “covered reasons” on a policy. CFAR allows you to bypass that list, giving you greater flexibility and freedom when making decisions about travel reservations. You cannot purchase CFAR separately – it can only be an “add-on” benefit. It is offered as a part of certain comprehensive plans and will only be available if you meet certain criteria, including purchasing the insurance within 21 days of your initial trip deposit. If you meet all the conditions, most of the policies will reimburse you about 75% of your trip costs should you need to cancel. These plans can add another $150-$250 to a comprehensive plan for a typical week abroad.

We use Insuremytrip.com to purchase travel insurance for our guides and crew. They have an option to choose the Best Plans for Covid-19, which we find handy. We have no affiliation with them. They are an aggregator with an easy to use website and good customer service.

Please don’t wait on this. You’ve committed to a swimming vacation for yourself, now go protect it for peace of mind and security.

We can’t wait to swim with you!

Cheers,

Hopper and Heather
