Swims

All swims are guided, with at least two SwimVacation guides and one local guide swimming with the group. We do not race. We tour the underwater sites and have fun. You can go hard, or you can go easy. Elite swimmers will be offered longer swims. Tour locations change every day, depending on weather and the desires of our guests.

Swims are tailored to meet the needs of swimmers with different abilities. With only 6 - 8 swimming guests per trip, two small groups may be formed, and each group may create different goals. Ocean swimming is our passion, and it’s the focus of activity on your SwimVacation.

Wetsuits

The clean, clear waters of Scotland are quite cool, even at their warmest in late September. We can expect temperatures of 58º - 62º F. For the enjoyment and safety of all of our swimmers, wetsuits are required, and neoprene caps, gloves and booties are optional but recommended. If you need help finding a wetsuit, let us know! If you’d like to arrange to rent one and have it waiting for you at our trip location, let us know!

Accommodations, Food + Beverages

This special land-based trip will be hosted by Roam West, a lovely adventure inn in Inchree, Scotland. Each room is cozy and warm with en suite bathroom. There is a common kitchen space where we will have access to coffee, tea, hot chocolate and snacks around the clock, and a drying room for all of our wetsuits and additional gear. Roam West features a homey pub, with fantastic local Scottish pub fare. We will have private meals prepared for us for breakfasts and dinner, and special dietary needs can be accommodated to a certain extent. Our lunches will be either boxed up to travel with us, or taken at pre-arranged locations. All but one of these is included in your fare. We will have snacks and beverages (cold and hot!) available before and after each of our swims.

Activities

In addition to our once daily organzied swims, we will have a second activity each day. These will include post-swim saunas, a private castle tour, a private driving tour of the area, a whiskey distillery tour (with tastings!), a gin house tour (with tastings!), live local music, wandering a charming seaside town, a waterfall hike, a cold dip with warm beverages and more.

Getting Here

Our trip begins on Saturday afternoon and ends the following Saturday morning.

Your best bet is to fly into Glasgow International Airport (GLA) where we will pre-arrange your transfer by Ember bus (the E5 route), a direct, zero-emission electric bus service from Glasgow to Onich, where our hosts will pick you up for the short ride to the inn. Your bus journey will be about 2.5 hours of gorgeous scenery which will be your introduction to this spectacular place. Alternatively, you can fly into Edinburgh Airport (EDI), and enjoy a 3 hour Ember bus journey (the E4 route) to Onich, where our hosts will pick you up for the short ride to the inn.

As you plan your travel, remember to stay flexible, be open to adventure and have patience! And remember that we are happy to help you plan and book any and all portions of your journey.

Passport & Visa
As of 2026, US citizens traveling to Scotland or anywhere else in the United Kingdom are required to have a valid US passport and pre-approved Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). You must apply online or via the official UK ETA app before your trip. Applications take up to 3 working days to process, so you should apply at least a week before flying. Once approved, your ETA is valid for 2 years (or until your passport expires, whichever comes first) and allows for multiple entries. It costs £10 (approximately $13 USD). If you are filling out the application on a computer or are applying for someone who isn't physically with you, use the direct online application form at GOV.UK Apply Online, but the fastest method is using a smartphone using the official UK ETA app. The app lets you use your phone's camera to scan your passport's photo page and its biometric security chip.

Phone/Internet Service
Be sure to switch to an international plan before your trip, and set up a WhatsApp account. Our inn has decent wifi.

Costs not covered by your charter / SwimVacation fee:

One lunch in a seaside town.
We will spend one afternoon with free time to roam and enjoy a lunch in an establishment of your choice. Day and location TBD depending on weather and other circumstances.

Gratuity.
At the end of your trip, please consider leaving a gratuity for your SwimVacation guides. The customary amount is 15% to 20% of your fare, but this is completely up to you and how much you enjoyed your time with us.

Insurance. All SwimVacation customers must be self insured for medical and repatriation costs, and for all activities you will pursue on your vacation. Many health insurance policies to not cover costs related to these activities. For the best rates and options, we recommend Insuremytrip.com. Highly recommended: Purchase trip insurance that covers cancellation or trip interruption in the unfortunate event that you have to cancel your reservation with us or become delayed. Do this as soon as you make a deposit on your SwimVacation. You do not need to wait until you purchase your air travel! You can estimate travel costs and insure for that amount.

CANCELLATION POLICY

Because SwimVacation trips involve advance commitments for chartered vessels, lodging, guides, transportation, and other limited-capacity arrangements, the following cancellation terms apply:

Guest Cancellation

If a participant cancels their reservation, refunds will be provided as follows:

  • More than 12 weeks prior to trip start date: 50% refund of total trip fees

  • Between 12 and 4 weeks prior to trip start date: 30% refund of total trip fees

  • Less than 4 weeks prior to trip start date: no refund

Credit card processing fees are nonrefundable.

If space is available, SwimVacation may, at its discretion, allow a reservation to be transferred to another departure or participant.

We strongly recommend that all participants purchase comprehensive travel insurance, including trip cancellation, trip interruption, medical, and emergency evacuation coverage.

Cancellation by SwimVacation

All SwimVacation departures require a minimum number of participants to operate. SwimVacation reserves the right to cancel a departure due to insufficient enrollment, force majeure, unsafe conditions, government actions, weather events, or the failure of third-party operators or suppliers, including charter vessels and lodging providers.

In the event that SwimVacation cancels a trip, all payments received directly by SwimVacation will be refunded in full. Refunds are limited to amounts paid directly to SwimVacation.

SwimVacation is not responsible for additional expenses incurred by participants in preparation for a trip, including but not limited to airfare, hotel reservations, travel expenses, visa fees, airline delays or cancellations, third-party booking charges, medical expenses, or other non-refundable costs.
